Best of the blogs: accountancy

Need some inspiration in accountancy? Here’s our pick of the topic’s top five blogs…

economia
Few sources of accountancy news and comment come with the stamp of a professional body. In this instance, economia delivers daily news updates and in-depth features on a number of topics in and around accountancy on behalf of the ICAEW. Although the subject matter ostensibly hails from the profession, economia takes on meaty topics from wider financial circles, and does so with an independent voice.

BookMarkLee
For a practitioner’s eye-view of all things accountancy, Mark Lee’s blog offers a host of practical advice for the independent accountancy professional. Although he no longer provides professional advice, Lee is connected to the profession in a number of various and interesting ways: he facilitates The Inner Circle for Accountants, chairs the Tax Advice Network and is a consultant practice editor for AccountingWeb. These links mean Lee is well-positioned to keep abreast of the major issues facing the industry, and he succeeds at this on a regular basis.

HMRC is shite
This site’s URL probably says it all. Aside from the scatological parlance, the blog contains many valid criticisms of HMRC – mainly concerning its approach to tax collection. The majority of posts are tinged with a cynical humour that makes reading even the most prosaic of subjects a delight; aping the HMRC’s notorious ad campaign, Frost imbues his posts with the catchphrase ‘Tax does have to be taxing’.

Tax Research
Few people working in accountancy and tax have the acumen of Richard Murphy. Named as the seventh most influential person in global tax in 2013’s International Tax Review, Murphy has been lauded in the national press for his campaigning blog, with nods of approval from the Mirror and the Guardian. His blog clearly reflects the passion and tenacity with which he engages in the national debate on tax – and offers a range of perspectives and research that both steer the debate and work as a sense check of national policy.

Crunch
As an instance of content-marketing, this blog is proof that a corporate site can maintain some humour, originality and rigorous insight. While it tackles hefty issues related to taxation, it unsurprisingly speaks to Crunch’s other business interests in financial and business advice.
