Tom Hanks scores with Hanx Writer app

Road to Perdition, Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Big… As Hollywood stars go, Tom Hanks can be credited with a wide acting range, yet few would think he could extend his skills into app development.

You may be puzzled to hear, then, that Hanks has developed his own typewriting app, which would give any tool on our Apps for writers list a run for its free download.

Apparently Hanks was so taken with the visceral experience of writing on a real typewriter that he decided to try and replicate it in digital form. That means a vintage-looking keyboard (ok, old-fashioned), clicking typewriter sounds and a ding every time you fill a line.

The various guises of the app (from free to paid-for) have topped the download charts on Apple’s iTunes Store. Perhaps users were lured by the app’s big-sell blurb:

Behold, Hanx Writer – the App that provides the ease and speed of an iPad with the sound and pace of a manual typewriter. With Hanx Writer, you’ll hear the rhythm of your work with SHOOK SHOOK or FITT-FITT. You can rely on a DELETE key to correct your typos, or turn that off. Be bold and fearless!
