The Onion ramps up video

More evidence that the future is video comes with the news that satirical site The Onion is setting up a new video studio. According to Digiday, the new arm will aim to create a video channel for The Onion‘s sister titles (including Clickhole and A.V. Club) and aims to attract “opportunities for outside talent to collaborate on video projects with the media company”.

The Onion already creates around 40 videos a month, so the new studio’s focus looks like it will be on generating revenue through collaboration. Mike McAvoy, the company’s president and chief operation officer, told Digiday:

“The business opportunities are obviously super-interesting, whether it’s selling shows to networks or licensing content to other platforms to broaden our overall reach.”

And that “what’s really exciting is incubating ideas we like digitally that can then be sold to networks.”

The other use for the studio is in helping its content marketing division, Onion Labs, which creates leg-pulling video and written content for around 150 brands, including this for Honda:
