Brazil’s World Cup loss, in screaming headlines

Brazil’s World Cup loss is the tabloid’s gain. Yes, the UK’s red tops have turned the pun dial up to 11 for the World Cup hosts 1-7 semi-final defeat to Germany.

The pick of the bunch is probably the Daily Star, whose website leads with a picture of a distraught David Luiz and the head ‘Host busters!’.

In print, the paper has gone for ‘Sambaargh’, to reflect the party that soon turned into catharsis. (It saved ‘Host busters’ for the picture caption…). Inside the back cover, its double-page spread reads ‘Seven and hell’, with picture captions reading ‘Two good’ (for Miroslav Klose’s double), ‘Kroos control’ (Germany’s Toni Kroos also scored) and ‘Brazil at sixes and sevens’.

The Metro was also fond of ‘Seven and hell’ and used it for the inside page spread, but reserved ‘Das booted’ for its back page. It also used ‘Kroos control’ for a picture caption.

Identical hats have to go off to the Mirror and the Sun, who proved that great minds think alike: both printed ‘Rout of this World’ on their back covers. Inside, the Mirror led with the clever ‘Toast nation’, and yes, they also used a picture caption that read ‘Kroos control’.

The Sun resisted the Kroos pun, opting instead for ‘Net loss’ and ‘Kneesy does it’ (for a snap of Klose sliding on his knees).
